Jem passe l’été chez son grand-père, au bord du lac Érié. Elle se lie rapidement d’amitié avec Nathan. En ville, ils entendent parler du concours « Midnight Madness ». Pour y participer, il faut avoir au moins 13 ans et posséder son propre canoë. Jem a 13 ans, mais Nathan n’en a que 12. Elle devra donc courir seule… mais elle n’a pas de canoë. Son grand-père en a un, mais jamais il ne la laissera l’utiliser. Déterminés, Jem et Nathan décident de le réparer en cachette. Pourtant, dès le lendemain, un trou est réapparu… Quelqu’un ou quelque chose semble vouloir les empêcher d’y arriver. Ils persistent, et Jem finit par prendre le départ. Mais rapidement, elle se perd dans le brouillard. Lorsque le canoë commence à couler, elle comprend qu’elle n’est pas seule…

Jem is spending the summer with her grandfather on the shores of Lake Erie. She quickly becomes friends with Nathan. In town, they hear about the "Midnight Madness" canoe race. To participate, you have to be at least 13 years old and own your own canoe. Jem is 13, but Nathan is only 12. So she'll have to race alone… but she doesn't have a canoe.
